Pranayama

Pranayama is a fundamental practice within the ancient Indian discipline of yoga that focuses on breath control and regulation. Derived from the Sanskrit words “prana” (life force) and “ayama” (extension or expansion), it involves various breathing techniques that aim to enhance the flow of vital life force energy throughout the body.

What is Pranayama?

Through conscious manipulation of the breath, pranayama techniques facilitate deep relaxation, improved concentration, increased energy, and increased self-awareness. These practices involve controlling the duration, rhythm, and pattern of inhalation, exhalation, and retention of breath.

According to the over 5,000 year old ancient yogic system, Yoga Pranayama exercises influence the subtle energy channels (nadis) and energy centers (chakras) in the body, promoting balance, harmony, and vitality.

They are often used as a preparatory practice for meditation, as focused breathing helps calm the mind, balance the nadis, and quieten mental distractions.

Regular practice of pranayama is believed to offer a multiple range of benefits, including stress reduction, improved lung capacity, enhanced circulation, increased mental clarity, energy balancing, and a sense of overall well-being. However, it is important to learn pranayama techniques from a qualified instructor, as the effects can be powerful, making incorrect practice ineffective, or potentially harmful.

Pranayama Techniques

Ujjayi breathing involves breathing in and out through the nose while slightly constricting the back of the throat, creating a soft, audible sound. It is often used in yoga to enhance concentration and connect breath with movement.

Alternate nostril breathing involves breathing through one nostril at a time, using finger pressure to block one nostril while inhaling and exhaling through the other. It is thought to balance energy and enhance focus. This practice is well-known  by Gisele Bündchen.

Kapalbhati is a forceful breathing technique where quick, active exhalations through the nose are performed, while inhalation occurs passively. It is believed to cleanse and energize the body, promoting vitality.
